My Morning Routine

Despite the storm, Levo League still hosted Office Hours last week. They're 30 minute live streamed sessions with career experts and mentors. Tuesday's session was filmed from a dentist's office (gotta get creative when there's no power!) and Thursday's was filmed in my apartment!

I love Office Hours. I feel like I not only learn a ton, but I also get super inspired and simply pumped up about.... life.

On Thursday, Sallie Krawcheck said something that really stuck with me. Before the chat we were sitting there talking about how it's so much easier for guys to workout on workdays. They can work out during lunch, shower, and get back to work with no problem... I was saying how I have to plan workouts around my hair. I mean, that's semi-ridiculous.... but it's true. We're totally judged on our appearances in the workplace, so we can't show up with wet hair! During the video, Sallie says, "It's the little things that make us tired... even just the hair and makeup."

She describes a scenario where her male coworkers stated they had just "rolled out of bed" to make an early flight, while all the female coworkers had to wake up to do hair/makeup and get dressed. Not quite fair.

Let's say you spend 15 minutes doing your hair in the morning. Over the course of a workweek, you spend 75 minutes on your hair. Let's assume you work 50 weeks of the year... that's 62 and a half hours a year that you spend doing your hair.

The saddest part?

I spend a lot longer than that on my hair alone... let alone picking out an outfit and doing makeup!

I've somewhat-recently shared a "day in the life" and I've also somewhat-recently admitted that I'm nosy about wanting to know what's in people's bags... This is kind of an in between. I'm going to totally divulge my entire morning routine.

  1. Wow Carly! Reading your post about how you wake up early to do stuff really inspires me to do the same. :) I get up at 8, check weather and stuff, wash my face, do my hair (I wash my hair at night rather than in the morning), put makeup on, and I'm out the door. It takes me about half an hour to do all those. Of course I'm really groggy, and still half asleep haha...

  2. dry shampoo needs to be your new best friend! I workout everyday (I was a collegiate athlete and some habits never die)and I have to walk my dog. So the days I wash my hair in the shower I leave it down. The days I don't I use dry shampoo and I wear it up. It makes my life SO much easier

  3. Wow! Reading your blog today was like reading about my own morning routine. I wish I had some great advice to dispense on how to streamline the process, but the truth is, I've always had to wake up early (between 5:00 & 5:30) and give myself about 2 hours to get ready to walk out the door. Even your time frames for shower, hair, make-up, etc. sound familiar. Reading your blog is also part of my morning routine. :) I know a number of girls who tell me that they wake up 30 minutes before they need to leave, and can get everything in. I'm left mystified! lol All I can say this morning as I rush towards the door is - thanks for letting me know I'm not alone! :)

  6. I am with you. I totally plan my workouts around my hair. Now my struggle is that I want to go longer between washes for my hair... But does that mean I need to take more time between workouts? Lets not even get started on how make up factors into that equation. Who wants to mess up a good 'face'?

  8. I try to wake up about two hours before my first class on a given day, but usually end up actually getting out of bed 1.5-1.25 hours beforehand. In the meantime, I'm snoozing, reading the internet on my phone, or journaling. Then I shower and blow dry my hair, followed by doing makeup (usually just mascara, if anything!) and getting dressed. Lastly I'm making sure I have everything for class while eating breakfast or making it to-go, and heading out! The last things I do before I leave are make sure I have water in my water bottle and a sweater for the freezing classes! It's pretty efficient but I definitely admire your routine! I don't think I could be so consistent while I'm studying so much all the time. Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. I have been laying out my clothes the night before since I was a little kid, and it is a tremendous time saver in the morning. What takes 5 minutes the night before seems to take twenty in the morning since my brain is foggier and I'm more indecisive. Also, washing hair at night works better for me, but that's probably because I have gross hair so I just end up wearing it pulled back everyday anyway. There are friends who say they've never seen me with my hair down!

  10. I wish I had the willpower to pull myself out of bed at 5 am to read blogs and news articles! Maybe if it was 7 am and I had to be at work at 9 or something. I am so not a morning person.

  11. Get yourself a pack of sleep in rollers (the big foam ones with velcro around the outside) & a can of dry shampoo. Put the rollers in the night before- takes a night or two to get used to them but them you'll forget about them entirely- wake up, spray dry shampoo- the Batiste for brunettes is best (no white hairs!)- take rollers out & you have Kate Middleton worthy hair. I use this for working in London so it does survive big city working!
