Book Club | The Untethered Soul

It’s a been a while since the last time I did a book review. My Atlas Shrugging is taking forever, so I took a little break to get some regular reading in. Reading for me is the one time when I can seriously turn my brain off. Typically, I have 4,001 thoughts racing through my head. It’s overwhelming and stressful. Yet reading (unlike anything else, including television) allows me to be fully immersed into another world. Atlas Shrugged isn’t exactly the best book to read a few pages at a time.
I was having a crazy rough morning (okay, okay, it was a crazy rough week). Fine. Two weeks. I could hardly get through a day without crying. I think one of my greatest strengths is that I take things seriously. One of my biggest weaknesses? I take things extraordinarily seriously. So I get quite frustrated when I think things can be better or more perfect.
Another issue that I have… is the voice that I have in my head. I’ve had some seriously horrible things said to me over the years (both on and offline). But, the things I say to myself are 400x worse. It’s totally not okay.
One of my co-workers recommended that I read this book for those two reasons. She could tell how emotionally attached I was getting to specific events. And she was seeing that a lot of the pressure I was under was self-induced and coming from the things I was saying to myself.
Enter The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer.
I picked up the book as Barnes and Noble was closing (that’s how late I was at the office….). I really took my time with the book. Reading and re-reading chapters. Honestly, the book is really quite simple.  Yet, it’s an amazing way to really change the way you think and the way you deal with your emotional responses to certain situations.
It takes some focus reading, but it’s worth it. I’ve definitely been so much better with the way I react and deal with things. It’s challenging and, by no means, am I cured of my “bad tapes.” But… I can start to really hear myself think. You really have to read the book to understand that!!!
Let me know if you’ve ever read this book… or if you have a similar title that you think I should read next!

xoxo

Have you read Tuesdays with Morrie? It's an excellent book on life and lessons and how to view life differently. I just finished it for a class but once my semester is over, I'm going to reread it without the tethers of assignments hanging onto each chapter!

If you are interested in non-fiction, I just read The Power of Habit by Charles DuHigg and it was completely fascinating. I just put The Untethered Soul on hold at the library. Thanks for the recommendation.
