Two More Documentaries

There was a little bit of a lull for documentaries I felt like. Or maybe I was just doing a bad job finding them. Who knows!

But, over the past few weeks, I had the chance to watch two that I enjoyed. I’ll watch just about any documentary, even if it’s a terrible/low budget one, but I might not recommend it. These two I highly recommend watching.

Audrie and Daisy

Audrie and Daisy premiered on Netflix a few weeks ago. It’s eye-opening in quite a few ways. It follows the stories of a few girls, mostly Audrie and Daisy, though, as they grapple with the aftermath of sexual assault. I thought they did a great job with it– presenting the stories, admitting faults, and showing how it impacts everyone from the girls, family members, even the community.

Class Divide HBO

Then I watched a documentary on HBO called Class Divide. This hits at quite a few issues as it features children who, on one side of the street go to a $40,000 a year school, and children who live across the street living in public housing. Again, I thought it was really well done, and all of the kids and teens included in the film shine. But 8-year old Rosa hands down steals the show.

Have you seen any great documentaries recently?

PS Here are some of my favorite documentaries!

Thanks for the tip, these both look super interesting! I will definitely have to check them out. I’ve also been hearing rave reviews about the documentary “13th” on Netflix! Maybe a documentary marathon movie night is in order! 🙂

I NEED to see Class Divide. This is an issue that truly resonates with me, living in a part of CT that has such drastically different socioeconomic classes living less than 10 minutes away from each other. It’s something so important to educate ourselves about.

So I actually go to school at Northwest Missouri State which is located in Maryville, one of the settings in Audrey and Daisy. When I watched the documentary it was kind of weird to see the places that I know on a screen in this matter. Overall, it was a great documentary.

Older than Ireland is another GREAT documentary; it’s about people that were born before Ireland gained independence. It’s so well done and all of the people in the film are over 100 and share stories and opinions about growing old. So touching, and I can’t recommend it enough!

I watched The Imposter a while back on Amazon Prime and it’s on Netflix now! It’s such an odd story about a child that went missing and a man that pretended to be the missing child. Nuts.

There was a great documentary on CNN last night about Michelle Obama’s “Let Girls Learn” initiative, which is aimed at providing girls in developing countries with access to education. The film follows up with some of the girls who have gotten to go to school as a result of the program and documents their stories and the obstacles they’ve had to overcome to get to where they are. The documentary is less than an hour long excluding commercial breaks (I’m sure it’ll be on YouTube or something) and is well worth watching; I highly recommend checking it out.

I recently watched “The First Monday in May” on Netflix, and it was outstanding! The film follows Anna Wintor and the curator of the costume institute at the Met as they organize the debut of the “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibit at the 2015 Met Gala. I would highly recommend it! Thanks for these suggestions, Class Divide looks great!

I think the last documentary I watched on Netflix was ‘Hitler’s Olympics’, but I watch a lot of the ‘true crime’ shows Netflix offers. I really loved ‘Raiders of the Lost Art’ and ‘Myth Hunters’, and ‘Forensic Files’ is my go-to background show for getting chores/workouts done.

My favorite doc is Jiro Dreams of Sushi, it’s about this 80 something Japanese Sushi chef.

It has subtitles but it was fascinating.

I will have to check out these documentaries. I highly recommend 2: Children of Syria (a PBS Frontline documentary) that gives heartbreaking insight into the current refugee crisis; and White Helmets (on Netflix), a short documentary that shows coverage of the Syrian first responders to bombings.

I watched Audrie and Daisy when it first premiered! Another good one on Netflix is the Amanda Knox.

I live in NYC, so watching Class Divide was rough. I’ve spent a decent amount of time on the High Line and every time I go I feel like a new building pops up. It was a rough one, but I’m glad I watched it! I’m going to check out the other one too – thanks for these recommendations!!
