My Favorite Podcasts

I’ve been on the road so much lately. (Who am I?!) I thought I’d have all this time to read during car rides and on flights, but within twenty minutes I start to feel carsick. I used to never get carsick, and now it hits me like a ton of bricks.

I also do so much more driving. (I barely drove in high school because I walked to school and split driving times with my best friend.) While I love a good audiobook, I’m also a massive fan of podcasts. They’re much easier to listen to than an audiobook because the episodes are conversational or structured in an easily digestible way.

Podcasts

Julia and I just drove from Palm Beach to Tampa yesterday. It’s not a bad drive (just under four hours once we factored in our coffee stops) and I introduced her to the wonder of podcasts. The two of us were hooked on this one podcast that I kept seeing all over Twitter. It’s called “Missing Richard Simmons.” The podcast kind of does a deep dive on Richard Simmons (yes, the workout guy) and what happened to him after he “disappeared” in 2014.

We listened to all available episodes and even downloaded an app (Stitcher– it’s great) to have early access to the next episode. There’s only one left… I’m already in search of another great podcast to get into.

This was Julia’s first foray into podcasts, though, and it’s safe to say that she’s into it now. I literally am sending her back to Charleston with a list of my personal favorites that I know she will enjoy listening to. I thought I’d share those here as well– and would love it if you shared any that you enjoy!

“Awesome Etiquette” // This has been on the blog before, but it’s really just my favorite podcast to listen to. I love them so much that I “save” the weekly podcasts to listen to while I’m making a long drive by myself. It’s hosted by Emily Post’s great-great-grandchildren and talks about etiquette in a modern sense. The two cousins have great banter, and it’s fun to kind of hear reader’s questions and quiz yourself on what you would/should do.

“Serial” // This podcast took the country by storm!!! If you didn’t get a chance to listen to it, I highly recommend. The first season was my favorite. It discusses the events around a murder of a high school student in the 90s and tries to get to the bottom of who’s guilty. The creators of the podcast have a new series coming out called “S-Town” at the end of the month. Hop on that train now!!

“Stuff You Should Know” // Josh and Chuck host the podcast “Stuff You Should Know, on” and you should know that it’s amazing! They research different topics every week and present it in a highly entertaining and engaging way. You can find a podcast on nearly everything– from history to science to entertainment. Some are about really tiny things and some are on really broad things. They’re all fascinating though. I find that SYSK is a podcast perfect for listening to when you have more than one person in the car as there is always one you can find that everyone will enjoy!

“Modern Love” // If you love the column in the NY Times, you’ll love the podcast. I like hearing the stories read out loud and the essayist updates at the end are a perfect addition. I find that these are best to listen to while I’m doing a task inside like folding laundry, cooking, or cleaning (aka not driving).

Any podcasts out there that I should 100% listen to?

SYSK is one of my favorite podcasts!! I also love Stuff You Missed in History Class, which is like SYSK. I also started listening to Sooo Many White Guys, which is super funny and interesting.

My favorite podcast is definitely the Pandolly podcast (now the High Low podcast) by Pandora Sykes – I don’t listen to podcasts very often, but I like this one for listening when I’m walking to the subway!

My absolute favorite podcast is Radiolab. I love listening to podcasts – and have a number of preferred ones – but Radiolab is always my #1. The genre is science and philosophical investigation. Sounds kinda lofty, but it’s honestly amazing. The hosts weave stories around these questions you’d never think to ask, or maybe you did, but the way THEY ask them is so intriguing you spend the rest of the day thinking about it. There are so many episodes where, by the end of it, I just felt in awe of the world. Anyway, I’m probably making it sound like a heavy listen but it’s amazing! Check it out!

My absolute favorites that I love are “Invisibilia”, “Terrible, Thanks for Asking” “Radiolab”, “Planet Money” and “This American Life”. I could not recommend them any more.

I also really enjoy “”In the Dark”, “Freakonomics Radio”, “Reality Steve Podcast”, “Reply All”, “Hidden Brain”, “Can He Do That”, “Modern Love” and “Heavyweight”.

You were actually the person that turned me on to podcasts, Carly, when you wrote about Serial for the first time. Thank you so much! They have made a huge difference in my life. I am the biggest podcast fan now, and listen to them so much (walking, on public transport, if driving, when working out, cooking, doing household chores etc.). I have also listened to Awesome Etiquette since you recommended it, and really like it. Would love more recommendations on podcasts in the future!

Dear Sugar Radio! I’m obsessed. Some are heavy and sad, others are funny and uplifting. I just pick the topic that interests me and go. For me, it’s a driving podcast…glad I’m not the only one who has podcast location categories haha.

I was going to suggest Dear Sugar as well! I listened to all of Modern Love (I listen at work) and needed something new. I highly recommend!

I was actually just thinking of doing a post about this! I also love “More Perfect” (not just for legal nerds!) and the NPR game show “Ask Me Another.” I will listen to “Awesome Etiquette” soon!

Give the New York Public Library’s podcast a try. It is called “The Librarian is In” and it is obviously about books.

Kristina

Serial was amazing! Great suggestions, I just subscribed to Awesome Etiquette and Stuff You Should Know. I am also currently obsessed with podcasts, not sure how I can keep up with all the podcasts I follow haha.

My favorites include:
– Up and Vanished
– Generation Why
– This American Life
– In The Dark

I just got into podcasts and my favorite is “Here’s The Thing” hosted by Alec Baldwin. He interviews many different types of well-known people and is so good at getting them to open up about different aspects of their lives.

My absolute favourite and a must listen right now is Pod Save America. It breaks down what’s currently going on in US politics in an easy to understand way. It’s also hosted by three former Obama staffers!

Reply
Shannon

I second Pod Save America. And their media company also does Pod Save the World (interviews with global experts) and With Friends Like These (discussions with people from different walks of life). They are both really good too.

I just started listening to “Unqualified” with Anna Faris. She recently did an episode with Lauren Graham. It’s the perfect balance of hilarious and really sweet – it’s a must. I also love the Real Simple podcast Things Cooks Know. They have since stopped doing it, but the archive is awesome. Also, Keeping It 1600 (also shut down after Trump was elected) is AWESOME. It’s hosted by two of Obama’s speech writers who are hilarious, brilliant and incredibly insightful. They have since started Pod Save America, which is really similar, but more focused on the “what now?” They actually had Obama on for one of his final interviews. These are all top notch in my book!

I love The West Wing Weekly! Actor Josh Malinda and West Wing Superfan Hrishi Hirway discuss one episode a week and often feature a guest, such as the actor whose storyline was featured in that episode or an expert on the topic they’re discussing. They started with season 1, episode 1 and season 2, episode 22 (the season finale) was just released today. If you’ve already watched the entire West Wing series I’d recommend re-watching week-by-week along with them. If you HAVEN’T watched the series yet then girl, get on it!!

Note: the actor who does the podcast is Josh Malina. Apparently my iPhone would prefer his name be Josh Malinda, though.

I am SO into podcasts! My favorites right now are Reply All (crazy stories about the Internet), Science Vs (taking hot/controversial topics like fracking and dissecting all the studies on it to separate fact from fiction), Surprisingly Awesome (taking something boring like concrete and telling why it’s actually awesome), Twice Removed (crazy family tree research stories and connecting people’s family trees in unexpected ways).

Reply
Martha

Definitely give “Start-Up” a chance – it’s a podcast featuring startups and one season is just literally about themselves, starting this podcast company. It’s awesome! If you want some laughs, “My Dad Wrote a Porno” is HILARIOUS. It’s just as it sounds….

Also discovered “Doree and Matt’s Egg-cellent Adventure” where a couple is trying to conceive via IVF. Very inspiring to listen to!

It might not be for everyone but I am obsessed with The History of England podcast!!

Reply
Molly Beth

I second “Terrible, Thanks for Asking” and “Dear Sugar.” A friend also got me hooked on “Two Dope Queens,” which is hilarious and irreverent, but often really poignant.

UP AND VANISHED!! If you like Serial, you’ll love it. It’s about a missing person in Georgia and there’s so many juicy plot twists

Reply
Lauren @ Lauren, Etc.

If you’re into minimalism and family life, The Minimalists and Cohesive Home, are my top 2. Dave Ramsey is great when I need a kick in the pants to keep my finances in line. But if you’re looking for a good laugh, Anna Faris is Unqualified is amazing. She is wildy inappropriate and hilarious, definitely not a podcast to listen to in mixed company.

My two favorites right now are Freakonomics and The Moth. I love The Moth so much that I’ve gone to two of their live storytelling events and they are amazing. While listening The Moth I have laughed so hard I’ve cried and actually been moved to tears by other stories. It’s amazing how much you can learn another petson’s perspective from this podcast. I feel like if everyone listened to it, our world would be a much better, more compassionate place.

Freakonomics is fodder for great conversation and tidbits that come up far more often than I ever would have anticipated. I read the first book that Levitt & Dubner published in high school and the podcast is a great addition!

I love a lot of the ones that are already mentioned (Radiolab, This American Life) but the one that got me into podcasts is “Go Bayside”. Each episode features comedian April Richardson and a guest (usually another comedian) and they watch an episode of Saved by the Bell (prior to recording) and then dissect it for the listeners. It is really hilarious. If you have any nostalgia about Saved by the Bell (good or bad) you’ll probably enjoy it. I was usually crying with laughter during most of them.

You will love “How I Built This”! He interviews amazing entrepreneurs like Kate & Andy Spade, the founder of Patagonia, Zumba, Crate & Barrel, Zappos, the list goes on. It’s a detailed look at how they got their start and rose to success and it’s SO GOOD!

Reply
Tereena

I’m late to this thread, but I was scrolling through just to make sure someone recommended this one to you. “How I Built This” is my favorite!

Reply
Lauren

I definitely recommend “The Moth.” It’s a storytelling podcast where ordinary people (although I think they’ve had a few guest celebrities as well) will recount funny or interesting stories from their lives. All of the ones I’ve listened to have been really well done. If you’re interested, I can recommend a few of my favorite episodes.

I also like “The Daily” from the New York Times. It’s a 20-minute long podcast released each weekday morning where they discuss a few of the top news stories of the day. They always interview various experts on a given topic, which makes all of the stories really interesting and informative. I usually listen to it while I’m having my morning coffee, and it’s a great way to start the day off a little bit more informed about what’s going on in the news.

Reply
Lauren

Sure thing! A few of my favorites that I can think of offhand are Jessi Klein (she has two, but I’d start with “Dale”), Elna Baker, George Lombardi, and and Paul Bacon. All of these are on Youtube. You honestly can’t go wrong though; I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a bad episode.

Lately I’ve been listening to “The Mystery Show”. It’s really great. Unfortunately, there are only six episodes…

Lady Lovin’! It is hosted by Lo Bosworth (Laguna Beach and the Hills) and two of her best friends. It will make you laugh out loud. Just 3 girlfriends talking about life. So light and great!

Ugh, I listen to so many podcasts it’s hard to pick only a few favorites but here are some you might like:

– Pardon My French (w/ Garance Dore)
– What Should I Read Next? (lots of good book recommendations)
– Travelogue (from Conde Nast Traveler)
– The Dinner Party Download (they often feature the Awesome Etiquette hosts)
– Pod Save America (the only political podcast I can bear listening to these days, it’s hosted by former Obama staffers like Jon Favreau and Jon Lovett)

The Paper Year! It’s a couple who got married who are in their first year of marriage (their paper year) and they interview couples that have been married for a year, 10 years, 20 years, same-sex marriages, couples with kids, couples who are pregnant. I never believed in soulmates but one couple, completely changed that for me! You cry and laugh a lot!

I started listening to podcasts when I was commuting via car in Michigan and going craaaazy in traffic. Now I take the train the majority of the time but am hooked on so many!
Storytelling: The Moth, Death Sex & Money, You Must Remember This, Lore
Advice: Happier with Gretchen Rubin, Dear Sugar, Awesome Etiquette (it really is the greatest!)
Food: Burnt Toast, The Sporkful, America’s Test Kitchen
Culture: Another Round, Dinner Party Download
Comedy: Two Dope Queens
…and I’m always open to more!
Man Repeller just started another one and I’m excited to begin that one as well 🙂

I love podcasts so much, they really are what get me through my work day. I listen to so many that were mentioned here but I didn’t see “You Must Remember This”. It is all the behind the scenes stories of Old Hollywood! I love that era, so this podcast is right up my alley!

Would absolutely second this. Criminal is probably my favorite podcast – and I’m not even into shows like SVU or Law and Order or anything like that. It’s genuinely full of interesting stories that often end up explaining history, policy, or little problems I didn’t even know existed for people. Really opens your mind and makes you think.

I’ve been searching for a new podcast, thanks Carly!

This one’s from 2015 (I think) but it had my friend, Mollie and I hooked at the first episode! Limetown is a fictional podcast about an entire town that goes missing without a trace. Usually I’m not one for science fiction, but it was such a fun podcast, I recommend!

I have recently been getting into podcasts as well! Here are my top two recommendations:

For history lovers:
The History Chicks: two friends who look at different women throughout history that have had an impact on politics, art, and culture

For movie lovers:
The Flop House- Three current/ former writers from the Daily Show take a close look at movies that have “flopped” or are just plain bad; their movie analysis is hilarious!

I recently got into podcasts last summer for my long car trips. I usually like something “light” but fulfilling to listen to.
Some of my favorites are:
Modern Love
Book Club Appetizer (discusses popular books and pairs an appetizer or drink with the book)
No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis (this is a new one for 2017, she interviews women who are on top of their game)
Millennial (self explanatory–All about millennials)
Quick and Dirty Tips (so many options for whatever you’re looking for tips in)
Stuff your mom never told you (is always pretty on point!)
Grey’s Anatomy After Show (self explanatory)

Hi Carly! I think you’d love “Criminal.” Each episode is a short 30-minute deep dive into a crime or specific criminal. It ranges from serious crimes to crimes of protest for a good cause. It’s the perfect length for when I’m citibiking home from work (when there isn’t a blizzard!). A great bonus is that the narrator, Phoebe Judge has a really soothing voice.

Check it out!

A Time and a Plate is fantastic! It’s my Claire from the Kitchy Kitchen. She looks at history through the lens of food and her research is super thorough. Her story-telling skills are wonderful, and both my husband and I find her voice super calming. Each episode has two parts: 1. the history lesson, which is super great quality and 2. the interview with another person which includes a recipe. The second part tends to be lower quality and not always as interesting, but it is SO worth it to even just listen to the first part!

A couple podcasts I just cannot live without right now are TED Radio Hour and Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Kids. TED Radio Hour is great because it takes a variety of experts on one topic, which provides a wonderful, well rounded and informative podcast. I never get bored listening to it. Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Kids is hilarious and definitely makes you feel 100x better about how you thought through issues and dramatic moments as a child. When people say you’ll look back years later and laugh about it, this podcast exemplifies it.

The Skinny Confidential Him and Her – I look forward to this podcast every single Tuesday, so entertaining!

Harry Potter and the Sacred Text – so interesting for any HP fans out there.

Mostly Mom with Tia Mowry – I’m not even a little bit close to being a mom, but Tia makes this podcast contagious.

The Lively Podcast – perfect for morning inspiration.

My Favorite Murder is a hilarious true crime podcast (I know that sounds crazy but it works) hosted by two badass female comedians. If you liked the true crime aspect of Serial but are interested in maybe something a little more lighthearted, MFM is your podcast!!

MFM is the BEST! I ugly snort-laugh like five times (at least) every episode! It’s a great way to listen to true crime without getting too bummed out.

(and the host is from my neighborhood which makes it even more interesting to me!)

SYSK is one of my favourites too! I don’t mind Stuff you Missed in History either.

ohhh my goodness I have gotten so into podcasts this year.
“The History Chicks” is so interesting. It is two women talking about interesting and famous women in history. They dive into fictional characters once a season too. I listened to it the whole time we were painting our house!
“Happier” is BY FAR the podcast that has changed my life. It’s tips and tricks on how to live a happier life. People call in and tell how they make their lives happier and guests speakers are constantly on the show. SOOOOO life-enriching!

If you’re a true crime person, check out My Favorite Murder (it’s two middle aged comedians just talking about different murders and it is so good), Up & Vanished is like Serial, and Criminal which is short, scripted true crime stories that are SO interesting. Stranglers is like an 10 part mini series about the Boston Strangler and is amazingly made!

Pod Save America and Pod Save the World are also both super amazing. Unqualified by Anna Farris is good but you have to like the type…its like talk radio.

Reply
Ally Stuart

My current faves are Lore, You Must Remember This, Dear Sugar, and Real Ghost Stories Online. I’ve been a guest on Wasting Your Time w/ John Wilson several times, but it’s very much a nerdy podcast (and we can get pretty inappropriate/NFSW language wise off the cuff), so I’m not sure that’d be your cup of coffee. It’s fun, though. I love doing it.

“The Way I Heard It” with Mike Rowe! (The guy from Dirty Jobs) They are all around 10ish minutes long which is perfect when you do not have enough time to devote to an hour long podcast! They are all true stories with a little twist, and they keep me hooked every time I listen!

Reply
Emily

I love that you are featuring podcasts! They are my new addiction for making work commutes and daily workouts so much more enjoyable!

My favorites include: This American Life, Science Vs. (so entertaining and education + the host has the best Australian accent), My Favorite Murder (hilarious and a total guilty pleasure if you enjoy murder mystery), Crimetown (similar to Serial in that the 1st season is focused on one story), and Start Up (as an entrepreneur, you would LOVE this one- start at season 1).

I could go on and on…

I would second This American Life (one of the original podcasts in my opinion)! It is so varied and just really well done.

Also, relating to your earlier post about being more politically engaged, I recently discovered Pod Save America, which is really well informed & hilarious.

For a one that is a bit more cut and dry, I also enjoy the NPR Politics podcast, which is a really concise summary & commentary of US politics. These are only 30 minutes, which I find super digestible.
