Epilogue

So if I were to write an epilogue to The Freshman 50, this would be it.

I honestly can't believe it's taken me this long to figure it out in the first place... I mean, I'm a senior. I just "applied" to graduate. I have three and a half-ish months left on the Hilltop. And I'm just now figuring this out?

Partly because I was on a men's rowing team... I feel like I never really met that perfect group of girlfriends at Georgetown. It's not that I don't have friends here– because I do– but I don't have that super close group of girls like I did in high school. I was so lucky to have Little V on campus with me, but now she's so far!!!

When I envisioned my years at Georgetown before I got here, I always thought I'd find and meet girls just like I had in high school. But it didn't really happen that way. I have girl friends that I talk to when we bump into each other. I have girl friends to work on projects together. I have girl friends to grab dinner every other month.

I don't really have anyone (now that Little V is across the pond) to escape the library and go shopping. No one to go to a party (if, for some reason I decided I even wanted to go to a party) with. I mean, seriously, I didn't even have anyone to room with or live in a house with off campus this year.

But then I realized something...

I don't have to be best friends with everyone. And I certainly don't need to be best friends with someone from Georgetown. I guess I was thinking in a total Black and White manner. I either had a best girlfriend on campus... or I didn't. I WAS SO WRONG.

I have found friends outside of the gates of campus. Seems like a total no-brainer, but I had completely never thought that this was even an option. I've since become really great friends with Stephanie. She and I knew each other from the blog-o-sphere and she wrote for Prep Talk for the first six months! Steph just moved to DC after she graduated from university and we have hit it off so well!

We went out to dinner the other night with two other (new) friends and then I spent the night and we did "girl" things. Like, you know.... cutting her hair.

I had to watch a 15 minute YouTube video on proper hair cutting technique.

(For the record, this might actually be the dumbest thing I've ever done. I am quite thankful that I didn't mess up and neither of us cried... however, I will never cut another person's hair again. Talk about high-stress!!!!)

I've also gotten to be really good friends with a couple of girls from GW.

Even if you have a great group of friends on your campus, it's not a bad idea to branch out and try to meet as many people as you can in the city. Sometimes it's great (and necessary) to break away from the daily grind of campus life.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Did you have a hard time finding close friends on campus?

My Pandora One subscription has run out... and I haven't been able to "pull the trigger" to buy another year. However, I am getting extremely sick of listening to the commercials. Especially since it thinks I'm in Tampa, so it keeps playing Tampa-related advertisements. Seriously getting on my nerves.

I keep a special "notes" file open in my gmail account where I collect good songs to make new playlists. I finally got a good number to make another playlist :-) I love pulling up Spotify and listening to my favorite songs. In fact, sometimes I forget that I've personally curated the songs and I will think to myself, "Oh man, Pandora is on today." And then I remember it's not Pandora and it's perfect because I picked the songs out myself!!!

One of my latest obsessions: Trench Coats

Okay, now I've always thought that I was not the type of girl who could pull one off. I always see these young professionals rushing around downtown DC with their trench coats on. (Or old men...) The classic coats felt "out of my league" a bit, I guess. Rainy weather? I'd just throw on a rain jacket!

But then I started coveting one. I ended up getting one on Black Friday (yes, as in months ago) and I still was kind of at a lost of how to wear it. I will readily admit that I was sort of intimidated by the beige coat hanging in my closet.

And then I pulled it out one day.

And never looked back.

I wear it all the time. The trench is perfect for the mild winter and frequent rain we're experiencing in DC. Frankly, I even wear the coat when there isn't a cloud in the sky!

After my Instagram Photostrip post, I was contacted by a representative from Postagram to try out their mobile app. They sent me a couple of credits so I could send a few postcards.

This is what the screen of my phone looked like while I selected my picture and added text. You go through the steps and add the recipient's address and everything.

Super simple... the hardest part is choosing what picture to send!

It arrived! I sent one to my mom while I was in New York City. I didn't tell her that I had sent it so it was an added surprise for her.

More Cover Shoot

I decided to share some more (read: a million) fun pictures from the Sweet Lemon cover shoot!

We had so much fun doing the whole shoot. We, of course, had big plans for a shoot... and then a week before we found this super retro outdoor laundromat! It was just too fun to pass up. Florida was having fantastic weather and in true dramatic fashion, the forecast for the day of the shoot was RAIN. And LOTS of it.

Because of the weather scare, we shifted back the schedule by an hour in efforts to "beat" the rain. The morning started in a makeup chair (Bobbi Brown, naturally) and five weather-related freak outs.

The photog for the day was Sporty Sister!!! I am so proud of her!!!

Can we talk about this... I swear... it was a Sweet Lemon miracle.

The custom stamper has been on my Christmas list for years... but I can never choose what design I want, so I never end up getting it... but it's so perfect.

Rifle Paper Co.

I've known about Rifle Paper Co. for quite some time now, but it's been popping up on my radar as of late and I can't get the brand out of my head!

It's based out of Winter Park, FL which is super close to where I'm from... in fact, my high school used to race Winter Park in crew :-) [College Prepster Side Note: Those races were always a big deal.]

The designs on the paper goods are too precious. If I were to have an animated television show about my life (haha) then I would most definitely want my character to look like a Rifle Paper Co. illustration!

Microsoft Touch Mouse

This will likely not come as a surprise...

But I am on the computer a lot. I spend a minimum of two hours every day just answering emails alone. Add in time spent doing homework. Add in all the writing I do. And the end result is basically carpal tunnel.

I've always had a weird issue with hand cramping, which is really funny... except that it actually hurts. Luckily, it hasn't been an issue as of late, but mostly because I have to find ways to prevent it! Typing on my phone and using the touchpad on my laptop are two big triggers.

(I'm definitely not giving up texting any time soon... but I do have a solution for the touchpad!)

A wireless computer mouse. I've had an Apple Mighty Mouse, and it's definitely been a lifesaver.

Since I'm a Windows Blogger, I get to test out cool new products. It's honestly like Christmas when something new shows up in the mail! Most recently, I was sent the Microsoft Touch Mouse to review.

I was skeptical, since I already had a working wireless mouse.... but, I love it. It has a much better "click" feeling than the Mighty Mouse.

Unlike the Mighty Mouse (which connects via Bluetooth), the Microsoft Touch Mouse has a teeny tiny USB receiver that you plug in. (You can also use an included cord, but honestly, who uses cords nowadays?)

The shape of the mouse is FAR SUPERIOR to my Mighty Mouse. It fits the natural curve and shape of your palm. Instead of "gripping" the mouse, my hand lays perfectly on top, which allows for a much more fluid range of motion.

I read the instructions to figure out what kind of finger motions do what, but it was much easier to just learn by doing! They make sense, so there's no need to actually "memorize" the movements.

I was concerned about the little USB connector. I mean, it's really small. How am I going to keep track of the thing? There's a little slot on the underside of the mouse where it hides away until you need to use it again– brilliant.

Here's my Mighty Mouse... it's currently sitting in the WAY back of a drawer!

The Microsoft Touch Mouse is designed for Windows 7... but it works on the Mac too! Just plug in the little receiver and turn the mouse on! This is great since I use both my Mac and PC, but don't want to have to lug around extra products. (And I much prefer the Microsoft Touch Mouse, so I'd rather be able to use on my Mac than the Mighty Mouse!)

Key Chain

The door to my room locks automatically... and it a major source of stress for me. Locking myself out of my room is a legitimate fear of mine. Especially if I'm heading to the shower or it's really early/late (when the residence hall office is closed).

I am extra paranoid when I'm walking out of my room. I have to ~~double~~ triple check that my key is either in my pocket or my wallet before I exit the doorway. And even when the door comes swinging closed, I have a death grip on the key to reassure myself I won't get locked out.

(As I write this, I'm particularly nervous that I'm jinxing myself...)

This is the key chain I have. It's a little enamel Lilly Pulitzer shift dress! (Confession: I definitely found it in one of my sister's drawers and stole it.)

I haven't been able to find another version or even a super similar Lilly one online, but I did pull a few of my favorites:

I have always been a fan of the Smathers and Branson needlepoint key fobs, but I love that this Etsy store sells kits so you can make and personalize your own.

Naturally, I'm loving the simple gold Kate Spade bow key chain! Definitely check out the other key chains that Kate Spade has... so cute!

The vineyard vines key chains are the most similar to the Lilly shift dress one that I have. I kind of LOVE the baby tote!

Okay, so the colorblock trend is not exactly new. In fact, it's kind of old... BUT, it's still going strong. I have a feeling that it will be huge this spring.

I do like colorblocking in moderation. I feel like going to colorblocked accessories is the perfect way to incorporate the trend into your spring wardrobe without going overboard!

I was at a party this weekend... shocking, I know. And I was actually talking to people... even more shocking! I actually had a lot of fun and caught up with some friends. One guy, who knows about my blog, was telling me about this shoe company that I would love.

He just sent me the link and I must say, he was right. Amazing is by far an understatement.

Belgian Shoes is based out of New York City.

My goodness, I want one of every style in every color.

Struggle.

I would definitely not go so far as to say that I am struggling right now. In fact, I'm doing quite well. School is great; my professors this semester are particularly engaging. I actually have a girl friend in the district finally. College Prepster is moving right along. The response to Sweet Lemon No. 2 has been great, and we're already well underway for No. 3 (... and No. 4).

But I'm struggling with a few things... as I honestly think many of us early 20s girls are.

Somedays I feel extremely young, even childish.

While other times I feel particularly old.

(I think this might have something to do with my grey hair... the official count is over 35)

I am having a very hard time trusting my heart.

And an even harder time knowing when to use my brain and not my heart.

When is something a mere coincidence?

What constitutes "fate"?

I want boys to get out of my life completely so it's simpler...

But then again, no thanks.

I worry that I am not sacrificing enough.

I fear that I may have sacrificed too much along the way.

Each morning I wake up with more energy than the day before.

By the end of the day, I lie in bed with no energy but still unable to sleep.

It's the craziest thing. There just seems to be this perfect unbalance between what I know and what I don't know. Half the time I feel like I'm trying to slow down and savor every moment. The other half of the time I just want to speed right through life.

Anyone else in this struggle?

A brief history with my introduction into coding.

Now, I know a bunch of guys (and some girls) who essentially began coding in the womb. You know the type.. and I'm sure you know at least a few people like this. The there was the next wave of coders who learned the drill during the MySpace craze.

My introduction to coding took place in the end-of-the-year (read: post exam) AP Physics project senior year of high school. My group (of three girls) got into a little bit of a competition with a group of three boys to see who could build the better project. The whole class could choose between three different types, but (of course) we chose the hardest: The Electric House.

Now, some groups projects met the basic requirements... but nooooooo... we couldn't settle for just some lousy old house. Especially if we wanted to beat the boys, our house needed to be GREAT. And great it was.

The entire house was controlled by a remote laptop using a wireless connection. (See the mess in the attic of the house?)

I tried to help out with the coding... but let's face it... I was much better at building the structure of the house (and decorating with American Girl mini furniture). Mackenzie took control of the coding and did a wonderful job while we watched her type lines and lines and lines and lines of code.

Doorbell.

Fully Functioning Burglar Alarm.

Sounds from an MP3 player.

Jacuzzi.

Ceiling fans.

Chandeliers.

The burglar alarm was the best. You had to (on the computer) type the correct code to get into the rest of the program... and if you got the code wrong, red lights would flash and this obnoxiously loud buzzing noise would go off.

Okay, back to coding.

So I do a small amount of code tweaking for this blog here and there... but I google EVERYTHING before I do it. And watch four Youtube videos. And back up the entire thing just in case.

I recently signed up to take the free course on Codecademy. If you're interested in coding, but don't really know where to begin... begin here!

It really walks you through the process.

I'm having a lot of fun with it! It's my post-homework personal project!

Bean Boots

Okay, so no one wears Bean Boots in Florida... and if they do now, it's only because of Tumblr. Seriously though, I had no idea what the shoes were. (Why on earth would you even need Bean Boots in Florida? Or rain boots for that matter... just not normal. Sandals only.)

The summer before I started my first year at Georgetown, my dad informed me that I would definitely need a pair of duck boots. I distinctly remember laughing (straight up laughing...) when he suggested the shoes. Nope, I would never wear them. Ever.

Nevertheless, he bought me a pair for my birthday (aka the first week of school)... even though I told him I would never wear them. Of course, the minute the weather turned cooler, everyone on campus started pulling theirs out of their closets. I still scoffed at the idea. The boots are undeniably the strangest looking things ever. But, within a week or two of cold and soggy feet... I was a convert. I started off just wearing down to the boathouse for practices, but slowly wore them to class from time to time.

I've had the L.L. Bean moccasins, but just recently got the six inch. Love.

Winter Blues

I am embarrassed that I thought it was actually cold last month. HA. I am freezing this week. At night, I legitimately wear waffle leggings, flannel pajama bottoms, a long sleeve shirt, and a thick fleece pullover to bed. Plus socks. And I do not sleep in socks.....

BRRRRRR.

When it's cold outside, I get the opposite of Wanderlust... all I want to do is curl up and read books (or this tedious thing called studying) and drink tea. In fact, I've been refilling my Brita filter daily to support my current hot tea habit.

I have two current colors going on so far in the month of January: Royal Blue and Red. I think red will ultimately be my color of the year. But blue will definitely be the color for the remaining cold months.

(Stacy and I are totally together on this one... for once.)

Actually, Sporty Sister is the one who got me into the royal blue to begin with!

She got me this blue Zara dress for Christmas and I instantly fell in love. I mean, it was truly instant.

And then I spotted this J. Crew coat and fell in love with the color again.

It's the perfect color to brighten up your wardrobe when it's drab and cold and bleek outdoors without looking like you're ready to jump onto the next cruise ship. Bright color, but not summery.

Love the J. Crew Blythe Blouse. Wear with jeans on casual days, or tucked into a black skirt for a dressier look.

Obviously obsessed with this Penfield Kasson Parka! Perfect color and perfect warmth.

I have these blue J Brand jeans, but haven't worn them yet. I think they are perfect... they're just like my red jeans, but... blue ;-)

Organize, Please... New Semester

I've had a few classes already for this semester, and I thought this would be a perfect time to do a little semester organization post. Most of us are back in school, or heading back fairly soon... there is no better time to get organized for the semester than now. Don't put off the organization, or you may find yourself struggling mid-semester or too busy to do it later.

The first thing I did when I got back to campus was to organize my closet and drawers of clothes. I'm a pretty neat person in general, but I must admit that at the end of fall semester, I was too stressed/busy to keep up with my clothes. I still had summer clothes and I was missing a bunch of shirts (which I found hidden in a pile of sweaters). Since I was unpacking my suitcase anyway the timing was perfect. For organizing clothes, I think the best solution is to pull everything out and refold and put back.

I even put new hooks on my walls that I had been meaning to do last semester. I always put off putting hooks up because I need time to figure out exactly where I need them and what I'll need them for. I added two little ones for handbags and totes. I had gotten in the habit of hanging them on my bed post, but it always drove me crazy seeing them. Now they're out of the way! I also added one to hang my coat. I keep most of my coats in the closet, but I love being able to hang one up that I wear frequently... or one that I need to dry after a rain storm!

Don't forget to create new folders for all of your classes. I've used the same system of filing documents since freshman year. You can read more about how I organize that here.

The biggest challenge was tackling my desk. After TAing for a class, I had accumulated a huge amount of assignments. I mean, seriously, the stack of papers was tremendous. I went through my desk and completely over-hauled it. I threw out old stuff, filed away important things, and refilled staples/paper clips/rubber bands. This took the most time, but I watched a Netflix documentary and got it done! It's always refreshing to have a clean desk.

That's a clean happy drawer :-)

Don't forget to read through all of your syllabi! I find that professors tend to not mention important information and "hide" it in the syllabus. Reading now and taking note of required formatting, additional assignments, and important dates will save you lower grades in the future.

I have already started my new homework notebook. I'm using my Maybooks one this semester. I go through and write down my assignments for the following week, and do the homework during the weekend before. (I'm missing a class on there because it hasn't met yet!)

Kind of strange, but I like being able to see my complete schedule from my desk. While I am answering emails and making appointments, I can refer to my class schedule. I also have updated my Google Calendar!

Overseas Update from Little V!

Have you missed Little V as much as I have?!? We gchat regularly, but it's just not the same! I miss taking "study breaks" and shopping on M St. I miss eating dinner together. I miss listening to the Country Strong soundtrack on repeat. I especially miss our outfit coordinations!!!

Little V’s Update from Oxford.

Today I will be turning in my assessed essay, I will have officially completed my first term in the UK “Michaelmas” as they call it here in Oxford!

While I miss the Hilltop, College Prepster, and everything else quintessentially American, I have managed to re-create a bit of my Georgetown life here in Oxford.

I am trialing with the Oxford Lightweight Men’s squad, and just got back from training camp in France. In March we race Cambridge on the Henley stretch, and will be umpired by Sir Matthew Pinsent.

I’m here to study Environmental Change & Management- my course is 35 international graduate students from nearly 20 countries, and they are all amazing people. The course takes us on field trips to beautiful places to study different topics. My first field course we went to a natural nature reserve on the beaches in Devon, where we looked at coastal erosion- it just happened to be nearly 80° F- who knew I would ever be swimming on England’s beaches in October? We also spent a weekend in Wales researching marine management, where we went for beautiful cliff walks.

There are 38 different Colleges that make up the University of Oxford- each college has their own library, dining hall, dormitories, sports teams, and so on. My college, Brasenose, is right in the center of Oxford by the Radcliffe Camera, and is over 500 years old! I quite enjoy formal halls at Brasenose; we wear gowns and are served 3 course meals, followed by 2^nd desserts in these beautiful dining rooms. At the beginning of each student’s time at Oxford, they are matriculated into the University. Here I am at my matriculation ceremony, wearing full Oxford regalia.

Instead of Gossip Girl, I have Made in Chelsea viewing parties (London’s version of the Hills/Gossil Girl) and Game Nights with some of my best friends. Lastly, while the College Prepster gets to head for New York on long weekends, I’ve had the opportunity to take the train into London. Jack and I went one day for Christmas Shopping and to see the Lion King matinee!

College Prepster Book Club + New Selection

How did revisiting (or beginning) the Harry Potter series go for you? I am honestly so sad that the series is over. I can't wait until Jacob (my next door neighbor whom I've babysat since he was born) gets a smidge older so I can introduce him to the books. I have only watched the first five movies... so I have three more to go! I definitely prefer the books (hello, the details are incredible!), but the movies are pretty darn good!

January's selection is good.

Ann Brashares has been one of my favorite authors. I have loved the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series for a long, long time. Her books are scattered around my house, my room, and my bookshelves. I haven't read the full series in a while, but sometimes I'll pull an installation off the shelf and read a chapter or two!

I was so happy to hear that Ann Brashares wrote another novel. I was on the wait list for it all summer long... apparently, it was quite popular!!! I removed myself from the wait list when I returned to DC, so I was extremely happy to see that The Last Summer (of You & Me) was available in my favorite library over break.

It was very different than the Traveling Pants series, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely even teared up throughout. I think it's a book that a lot of us can relate to, which is why I believe I enjoyed it so much. Alice has just graduated college and is about to go to law school... The whole novel is an interesting look at sisterhood, love, friendship, and growing up.

So, if you got through yesterday's post about boys... it probably seems like I'm a super bitter, picky, and crazy girl. Everything (except the crazy part) isn't true! I'm still open to relationships and meeting new guys and the works.

I also announced that I one of my 2012 goals was to have more of an open heart. I saw a post floating around Tumblr (and Pinterest) with the phrase: Love More, Worry Less. Well, of course, this is going to be a new motto... and it's definitely something I'll need to remind myself often. I recently way over-thought something and it completely backfired. Ugh.

Brace Yourself.... #boys

Please note: this post is posting on Friday the 13th. I find this symbolic in many ways.

I do not like talking about boys on my blog. I'm all for mentioning great menswear fashion (hello, obsessed with bow ties), but when it comes to my personal relationships, I avoid all together. I do this for a few reasons. Number One: I am a terrible relationship person. Number Two: I need to keep some things private. Number Three: To respect the identity of others.

I get requests all the time to answer relationship questions and questions about who I'm dating and whatnot. This is the first time I've decided to really delve into the topic... and I hope it goes okay. I honestly won't reveal too much information, but I'll touch on some important topics.

Okay, so where to begin.... Texting... I am the worst. I never know what to say, I use far too many exclamation points, and I believe that emoticons speak for themselves. I never wait for •him• to text me first. (Sometimes I try... it never ends well.) I have to change certain names to "Do not text" and "Do not pick up" in order to prevent inevitable heartache. But here's the thing... if I'm texting and/or talking to a guy on the phone it's a good thing. I don't really put a lot of effort into texting... unless I care! And if a guy gets scared off by my texting, he'd be WAY more scared by my regular crazies!

I have accumulated some Deal Breakers (capital letters required). Here are some of my Deal Breakers, in no particular order: Drugs (including non-prescribed "study drugs"), smoking, excessive drinking, laziness, being inconsiderate, treating other people poorly, extreme attentiveness during the middle of the night/lack of attentiveness when the sun is out. I really can't tolerate any of these. Too picky? No, I consider these minor standards that (all) men should really meet.

Privacy is another tricky issue. I have learned (sadly more than once) that there is a difference between wanting to maintain privacy for privacy's sake and wanting privacy as a defense mechanism. What I mean by that: I want a guy who WISHES he could tell every single person in the world that he's with me... but chooses not to in order to maintain privacy. Rather, I have found that some guys want privacy because they don't want ANYONE to know that they're with me. Sorry, but what? That's a major major major red flag. Here's an example of a bad thing: "Um, don't tweet that you're here." Or if they tell you to hide so a housemate doesn't see you. Run away, and run away now. I'm all for not sharing information about relationships online, but I want a guy to want everyone to know.

Being open-minded is a motto that I try to carry with me at all times. I adopted it back in freshman year at Georgetown and it has stuck. I apply it to tons of different aspects of my life (career, school, friendships, personal, and relationships). When it comes to guys, I definitely do not have a type. As long as they don't possess any of the aforementioned deal breakers, I will give just about anyone a chance. I don't care how they dress (but seriously, I'm not so interested in their clothing) or where they're from or their age or whatever. If they're interested in me and I'm not creeped out by them... I'll be open-minded.

Here's something that I get caught up on all the time. I like normalcy. Don't confuse this though... It's not that I necessarily want someone to be completely mediocre (I am quite attracted to super driven guys... remember the laziness deal breaker). I just want them to at least act normal. If I wanted to date an encyclopedia, I'd date an encyclopedia. If I wanted to date a fortune cookie, I'd date a fortune cookie. (Have you ever talked to a guy that spews out fortune cookie worthy lines?) There is a time and a place to show off, but please don't try to impress me. Honestly, if I like you, I'm impressed. No need to try too hard. This goes with dates too. There is nothing better than doing normal everyday things with a guy. You can learn a lot more about him this way and it's much easier to see if you "click" walking around the aisles of a grocery store than over a stuffy dinner where you're super anxious.

Know when and where to draw the line. Stopping when you really like someone but want to continue even though it's not a healthy relationship... is hard. Like, really really really hard. Trusting that if it's meant to work out, it will work out eventually... when the timing is better or when you're older. Trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right, it's probably not right. I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS lay out boundaries and rules before things get carried away. It's something that is super uncomfortable to bring up in what seems like a non-appropriate situation. Trust me, it's easier to talk about something when things are at a Zero then when they're at a Ten.

BUT, don't over think. I am The World's Number One Over Thinker. I over think what I'm going to have for breakfast. You can only imagine how I over think relationships. Sometimes my over thinking completely sabotages potentially good relationships. Pretty sad. I'm doing my best to overcome this and to find a balance between being smart and trusting my heart.

At the end of the day:

Respect yourself.

Know yourself.

Believe in yourself.

It'll all work out.

(Also, never ever ever settle.)

PS When in doubt, find a (really good) girl friend to vent to. That is my number one sanity savior.

PPS Letdowns caused by boys are the worst. BUT in the big scheme of things, it is just going to be a little blip in the story of your life. Don't let a (dumb) guy distract you from actually living your life (and dreams)!!!

Doughnuts

The Sweet Lemon Magazine team and I are obsessed with doughnuts. Like, 100% in love with the little confectionery treats. The look, the smell, the cuteness... but especially the taste!!!

I am also Dunkin Donut's biggest (coffee) fan and every time I drive through for coffee I am so tempted to buy a doughnut. (And even more tempted when they give me a free one for completing the world's shortest survey online.)

Our obsession came from one of the articles from the pilot issue. We edited the magazine over and over and over again, but I would keep the PDF of the doughnut picture (page 115ish) and drooooooool over it. I would personally crave doughnuts every single night.

And so the obsession began. With Paris in Dubai, I decided to make New Year's presents instead of holiday gifts for the two. Of course, it had to be doughnut related... and well, Soccer Mom is an expert cake pop maker. So making Doughnut Cake Pops seemed like an absolute no brainer. (I also saw a picture of them in a really terrible and gross looking book, but thought I could do it better.)

The final results. Can you say ADORABLE?!? I mean, really. It doesn't get much better than that, right? They were much more simpler to make than Soccer Mom and I were anticipating. We strategized and envisioned the process before actually going for it and we thought it would be much more difficult than it actually was. We followed typical cake pop procedure until right before we went to dip.

That is to say: we used one cake (did I mention that they are funfetti?!? even better.) and 3/4 can of frosting. Rolled the balls. Refrigerated for 15 minutes.

After taking them out of the refrigerator, I took my knuckle and pressed to make a small indentation. This both flattened the sphere into a more "doughnut shape" and gave the cake pops the appearance of having a hole in the center.

We dipped the balls into light brown melted chocolate (white chocolate + red, yellow, blue food dye). After that dried, I went around the doughnuts with a squeeze bottle with white super hot and super runny melted chocolate for the icing effect. As I was doing that my mom sprinkled the sprinkles on behind me. You must work quick with the chocolate since it hardens quickly!

The Beginning of the End

And so it begins. The first day of my last semester. Also known as the last first day of school. Hopefully forever. I have no intention of ever going back to school after this semester... unless I start my own reformed education place of learning. But I digress...

While I sat in the back of the taxi on my way back to school, I was honestly quite sad about not being home anymore. Yes, I'm a 22 year old senior and I still hate having to leave home. But as the taxi drove over the Key Bridge and the university came into view... I was taken aback.

I was instantly brought back to the summer before my senior year of high school doing the generic college tour with my dad. Georgetown was the last school I visited. I liked a bunch of other colleges I toured, but I knew I was going to go to Georgetown. I am fairly certain I turned to my dad five minutes into the tour and said, "Okay, I am going to Georgetown."

I also remembered the day my parents helped me move into my freshman dorm. We flew from Tampa with practically a million boxes on the airplane. We spent a stressful couple of hours in Bed, Bath, & Beyond. We couldn't figure out which entrance to use to get onto campus with the rental car. We pushed giant carts filled with everything I brought from the parking garage to the dorm... where the elevators were not on. That first night that I spent in the dorm was strange and felt completely surreal... as if I were simply in a hotel and would be returning to Tampa the next morning.

It's extremely difficult for me to wrap my mind around the fact that this is IT. The last semester. After every exam week, I would countdown: 1/8 complete, 1/4 complete, 3/8 complete...

Winter Break According to my iPhone

[Who uses real cameras anyway??? Actually, even Annie Leibovitz uses an iPhone for daily picture taking. If that doesn't say something about the iPhone, then I don't know what else would.]

I had the most amazing winter break. Finally, after years of being a rower/coxswain... I had a whole break to myself. No erg workouts. No training trips. Brilliant.

I can't believe I'm heading back to Georgetown for my last semester. I mean, honestly, where does time go? Luckily, I have at least a few more hours before classes actually begin again and I'm back on that ole hamster wheel. Here's the recap of my break:

Tonsillitis! I was actually super lucky and caught it extremely early. A bottle of pills and a shot in the rear end and I was good to go!

Teeth.

Can I share a little secret with you guys? Teeth absolutely terrify me. I have reoccurring dreams of my teeth falling out. I hate the dentist. I've had a strange history with oral surgeries. Ughhhhh. I shudder to even think about some of the things that I've gone through with my teeth.

Because of this, I am an obsessive tooth brusher and flosser. I even limit the number of times I allow myself to floss a day... because otherwise it can get out of hand.

But... I am also an obsessive coffee drinker. And with every passing day I felt like my teeth were getting more and more discolored. My whole family had their teeth whitened at the dentist, but I skipped out. (I do not need an extra reason to visit him, thank you very much.)

Of course, this left me with a choice.

Should I make a new New Year's Resolution to give up coffee? Hahahahaha.... I know, I know. Who am I kidding. Not happening.

So I came up with a new one: Taking back the Teeth Two Thousand Twelve.

I was really willing to try anything that didn't involve the dentist, and I think I found the solution on Try #1. Ready? The Arm & Hammer Challenge. Have you seen the commercials? I guess I saw a few too many of them over break. While I was in the toothpaste aisle of the grocery store, I was instantly drawn to the Arm & Hammer toothpastes. I picked one up (Baking Soda and Peroxide) and decided to give it a try.

My teeth are whiter after half a week!!! No exaggeration. I like how they're whiter, but not unnaturally so. (We've all seen those girls with teeth so white they look blue...). The paste even makes the edges of my teeth look whiter, which in my opinion is the hardest places to fix!

Needless to say, I am smiling a whole lot more!

The Best Blow Dryer Ever.

You know that age-old question: If there was one thing you could change about yourself, what would it be and why?

Now... I'm not one of those "Oh I'm perfect just the way I am" or "I wouldn't change a thing" kind of girls. I know exactly what I would change... in a heartbeat.

My hair.

Sure, as I've grown older I have learned to appreciate my hair more... but I still have my unruly hair moments. I only wash my hair every other day since it's so thick and tends to dry out with over washing. For that, I am thankful. But I absolutely dread mornings when I can't don my (super dorky, yet charming) shower cap. I literally lie awake at night planning out how quickly I can get my hair dried and straightened in the morning.

In high school, I used to take a shower at night so that my hair could dry by the morning and I could straighten without blow drying. (It also might have had something to do with my 5:45 am alarm clock...) Now that I'm a bit older, I relish my morning showers to clear my head for the day.

But this still leaves the most annoying part of my morning routine: blow drying my hair. Twenty minutes wasted under scalding hot heat that I can just feel ruining my hair with every passing second. Sadly, this is not even me being melodramatic here.

Enter the best blow dryer ever:

The HANA Air Professional Hair Dryer is the mack daddy of blow dryers. Misikko.com sent me one a few months ago to test out and share my thoughts with y'all. It is amazing. Of course, I was skeptical. I have a perfectly good $30 blow dryer from Target that does its job. I was blown away (hehe) by the sheer power of the HANA Air blow dryer. It BLASTS my hair dry in no time at all.

Things I like about it:

– There are little rubber nubs on both sides (good for lefties and righties!) so that when you lay it down on the counter it has something to rest on. This isn't something I would necessarily think to include on a hair dryer, but it's a little thing that I just love!

– It's not exactly "hot." Sounds like a bad thing? Nope. It dries with power as opposed to just heat. I feel like this has to be healthier for my poor hair, right?

– The cord is twelve feet long. Twelve. This is great for my dorm room, as the outlets are never by the mirror! I can plug it in on one side, but blow dry on the other.

– I think the weight and size are perfect. Not too small, but definitely not bulky. Kind of like Goldilocks... just right :)

What's the NUMBER ONE thing I love about it?

I can blow dry my hair in NINE minutes. NINE!!!! It used to take twenty!!!!!! I cannot even begin to describe how happy this makes me. Time is money, people.... time is money. If I blow dry my hair four times a week, I save 44 minutes every week. That is one whole episode of Dance Moms!

And how do you know it's really the best blow dryer in the house? Despite the fact that we have five blow dryers in our house... it's the only one my mom, sister, and I want to use!

[Funny side story: Soccer Mom was panicking on Christmas day about not having enough time to cook, clean, and shower before company arrived... and she literally repeated to herself over and over again, "I will use Car's blow dryer and have five extra minutes." It only takes about four minutes for her hair to dry with it!]

White Sangria

I am not a big drinker. Really, my whole family isn't. But I've been finding these recipes for cute-looking drinks on Pinterest. This is the one I made for our Christmas dinner. It's a "Winter White Sangria." (You can find the original recipe here.)

Soccer Mom and I made some the other night to celebrate a great GPA and 2012! We sat outside on the porch and read books & magazines. It was even chilly outside so we snuggled under blankets. (Unheard of by Tampa standards.)

What you'll need:

White Wine

3 Cans of Sprite

Grand Marnier

Limes

Pomegranate Seeds

Definitely, remove your jewelry. You don't know how tricky these little pomegranates are!

I suggest watching some videos on Youtube about how to deal with them. I watched two before I felt comfortable to "de-seed."

Also, wear an apron and a shirt you don't care about.

Wash the pomegranates. Take a knife and slice the skin, dividing the fruit into quarters. Then cut the top, kind of like a pumpkin. Then pry open the fruit.

I used two pomegranates so we would have extra seeds.

Here's the boring part. I took each little section and dunked it in a bowl of water. While the seed is under water, maneuver the seeds away from the skin.

Drain the seeds.

Slice the limes.

Pour everything into a pitcher.

Add ice and serve!

Tutorial: Instagram Photostrips

I am obsessed with Instagram. I just can't get enough of the iPhone app. It's so much fun to take pictures and add fun little filters and effects. I like how it's also a mini-social network.

Well, I love the app so much that I didn't want my favorite pictures trapped inside my iPhone for the rest of eternity. Don't they deserve to see the light of day too?!?!?

I read in some magazine a while back about how you can turn your Instagram pictures into a miniature book. I thought that was cute, yes. But how realistic and practical is a tiny book? Eh, I'll pass. Over break, though, I was reading all these websites with Instagram tips and tricks and stumbled on some cool resources. (For instance, cat Instagrams!)

And then when I spotted my next project:

Photostrips.

I have been obsessed with the charming quality of Photostrips for a long time. I even posted my favorite strips more than a year ago. Now, if it were up to me, I'd have one of the booths in the living room of my house. How. Cool. Would. That. Be.?

Well, you can turn your Instagrams (and, frankly, any pictures you have) into super cute and, more importantly, tangible photostrips.

Here's how:

I first picked out which Instagrams I was going to use. I tried to make each strip have a "theme," but I think that random ones would look cute too. I was planning on making three strips, with four pictures each. I made a folder on my desktop just so that I could get to it easier!

(I know, one is missing from the folder haha... not sure where it disappeared to!)

In Photoshop, I made a "template" for the Photostrip. I made the file 1.5 inches by 6 inches. Because not every Instagram used the same filter (and subsequently frame), I also went ahead and made skinny strips of white for the borders.

Can you see the white borders? I based the size off of one of the original Instagram frames. And just duplicated the shape so it maintained the same width.

Once I had the template for the border, I just placed four of the Instagrams onto the file. I arranged each so it was under the border and in an interesting order.

I repeated that process for the other strips and kept re-saving them. I would just delete the pictures from before, add the new ones, and then click Save As. Once all three strips were created, I made a new file. This time, I made it 4.5 inches by 6. I added all the other files into this one to I could be more efficient in the printing. (You can definitely fit a lot more than three strips per page... I just wasn't sure how the project was going to turn out and thought three was a safe number. Print landscape and add as many as you wish!)

I saved this file as a JPG and took it to Kinkos to be printed. However, I recommend saving as a PDF so that you can print it with crop marks! I chose the glossy cardstock paper and simply printed on an 8.5 by 11 sheet.

Here are the strips on one sheet. Now, I struggled because I wanted to make sure I left a proper sized border around the outsides. It was a little tricky and I was super OCD with the ruler.

But then I realized that if I lined up the edge of the photo with the CLEAR finger protector thing, it would leave the absolute perfect border of white. I don't know if you can see that in the picture, but it's worth zooming in to see! (There is the edge of the plastic and then the edge of the metal. The gap between the two edges creates the border.)

The next step is to just cut right down the middle of the edges to separate the strips. Again, a little tricky, but just takes some patience and proper alignment!

And there you go! Fun photostrips from your Instagrams!

This got quite the buzz going on Pinterest! Let me try to answer some of the questions that have come up:

You can use any picture, not just Instagrams! Crop the photo into a square and play around with filters in Photoshop so it has a vintage-y feel!

If pictures are blurry, you might not have a high enough DPI. Adjust the setting when you create a new file!

Be friendly with the Kinko's people and you might get a discount ;-) Printing b&w is cheaper, and looks pretty cute and more traditional.

My sister, upon seeing the original photostrips, requested that I make her a bunch! Also shown, photostrips of our Snow Bunnies collection. We sent them as "thank yous" to our great aunts who send a few each Christmas.

I took all the Instagrams I had of books and made an official Book Book Mark ;)

Wardrobe Upgrades

Looking forward a few months... I'm going to be doing a big transition into the Real World. I want to start updating & upgrading bits and pieces of my wardrobe over the next few months. I do not want to do it all at once for a few reasons. Namely, the cost. I'd much rather spread it out over a long period of time. Plus, buying a ton of things at once always leads to unworn outfits (with tags still on!). Slowly building is a much better way to see what you really need and what you'll really wear.

On my list for upgrading:

Belts.

Skinny belts, in particular. They're perfect to wear with high waisted skirts. They're perfect to spruce up a lazy jeans outfit. They're perfect for cinching a dress. They're perfect wrapped around your waist with a cardigan. They're perfect with fun little summer shorts.

Loving this Madewell belt (with bow!).

Business Wear.

I have a really difficult time finding perfect suits. I'm too tall for petites and too small for regular sizing. I want to take what I currently have to get tailored. I need to stock up on perfect suiting shirts and camisoles. Of course, I'd like to find that perfect "good luck" suit, too!

Baubles.

Specifically, long necklaces and pretty earrings. I have plenty of bracelets, but I need to spruce up the rest of my jewelry box! I love wearing longer necklaces nowadays, something that I was never into. I want to have a few that I can wear with collared shirts. As for earrings, I've been totally stepping out of my comfort zone.... as in, I now have two pairs that I actually wear ;-) I'd like to find a few more. Perhaps these:

If 2011 is any indication of how 2012 is going to be... this is going to be one heck of a year! Lots of changes will be taking place. I mean, for starters, I'm graduating this year. Saying that I was the graduating class of 2012 seemed like so far into the future. (I'm talking the future in terms of Zenon here!) But, what do you know... we're here.

Welcome 2012.

Here are my resolutions from 2011... and an update on how I did:

1) Make new friends.... Check!!!!!!! :-)

2) Wear ponytails less frequently.... YEP!!!!!!

(The background behind this resolution was that some guy once described me as the "girl who sat in the front of class with a ponytail." Not a fan.)

3) No more television.... Sort of. I didn't watch television at all first semester. I started watching TV again over the summer, and I watched shows on Netflix this semester. I did cut down significantly though overall.

4) Read more.... 100% met!

For the record, I will be continuing with these goals! They aren't limited to 365 days :-)

Additional goals for this year are:

Be more impulsive.

In a good way though. I had a long talk with a friend the other day about how I don't do anything impulsive. Even shopping for me is calculated... I go in with a list, a plan, and a budget. While being extremely thoughtful, and even cautious, is a good thing... it's only good to a certain extent. I need to do more things on a whim.

Have an open heart.

This has to do in terms of romance, but I really don't discuss that on here ;-) You'll just have to trust me on this one!

Biography Page Theory

Oh, you must know by now how much I love a good theory. Well this one is about how I present myself at any given moment. Basically, I pretend that everyone I meet (from a professor to the cashier in the grocery store) is in charge of writing a page of my biography. What would they say about me? What legacy, however small, am I leaving behind in the eyes of those who come in contact with me? Am I friendly and outgoing? Am I driven and hardworking? I remind myself of this on days when I'm feeling particularly grumpy or sad... If I am snippy with the cashier of the grocery store, what would she write in her one page?

Have more faith.

Celebrate
I have this horrible tendency to not celebrate accomplishments. The minute something happens, I'll maybe tweet it and then start thinking, "Okay, Carly... what's next?" I had some pretty amazing things happen in 2011... like, designing a valentine for Kate Spade, meeting 501 fantastic individuals, launching a magazine, incorporating a company, writing for Today.com, etc... Yet, I never take the time to really celebrate.

My 2011 Favorites

I just cracked up reading my list of favorites from 2010. So much has changed... and so much has stayed the same.

1. Books. One of my unannounced goals of 2011 was to finish 52 books over the course of the year. I had no idea how in love I would become with books. I wasn't even sure if I could finish 52 books... I mean, that's a book a week in addition to school reading! I am currently reading my 65th and 66th book right now... so technically I only finished 64. But that's WAY beyond my goal. Books have allowed me to escape stressful situations, travel around the world, meet new friends, and become a better student. The more I read, the faster I found myself being able to get through textbook chapters. In order to save money, because honestly 64 books is expensive, I started checking books out from the library. Brilliant. Everyone should get a library card.

(Just a few...)

2. Music. At the very end of 2010, I was gifted a subscription to Pandora One. I typically am not a music fan. Literally... the most played songs on my iTunes used to be from Baby Einstein soundtracks!!! However, over the course of the year, I have discovered the true magic of music. Lyrics written by strangers can match up so perfectly to my life. I actually listen to music now... and even try to remember some of the words. I love finding a new song and adding it to a playlist. Songs can really evoke some great memories.

3. Apple. I've been a fan of Apple since eighth grade when I got my first iPod Mini. However, this year my love for the electronics has been taken to a whole new level. I got a new Macbook Pro, an iPad, and an iPhone. Brilliant little products. I have gotten so much use out of all of them.

4. Entrepreneurship. This has multiple parts... so please bear with me! First, I have absolutely loved taking Entrepreneurship at Georgetown. So much so, in fact, that after I took the course in the Spring I was a teaching assistant in the Fall! I loved my professor and I loved my fellow classmates. It was a truly inspiring class and I can honestly say it changed my life. Also in entrepreneurship... I started my own company!!!!!!!! I mean, how crazy is that? TCP, Inc has been so much fun and I can't wait to see where it goes in the future. Also, I started sending out Prep Talk in January of 2011... I feel like I've been doing it forever so it's hard for me to believe it's only been a year. Oh... and don't forget Sweet Lemon Magazine! That's been quite the adventure!

5. Big decisions. I spent half of the year as a coxswain and half of the year not as a coxswain. Quitting crew was a major major major life decision, but I couldn't be happier right now. It felt weird at the beginning. Something I had been doing for years and all of a sudden it wasn't part of my daily routine. It was strange to have no rowing in the summer, and to actually be able to go home on breaks! I miss my friends, of course, but I'm much happier without the stress. (I also had an INCREDIBLE semester GPA-wise and I believe there is definitely a correlation there!)

6. New York City. This was on my list last year... but my feelings for the city have only grown more intense and more "real." I've made multiple trips to the city this year and I have fallen more in love. Oh boy. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Carly and the Big Apple. I think this is going to be huge. NYC watch out.

7. Meeting new friends. This was also one of my goals for 2010. (More specifically, I wanted to meet a new friend every week.) I interned with College Fashionista in the spring and I met some really fun people that way. I also took trips to New York and met some incredible incredible incredible people. I also had some friend "issues," but overall, I decided to surround myself with inspiring people and to let go of those who brought me down. New friends also comes with risks... but the unlikely risk is well worth it when you really connect with someone.

8. Red jeans & Loafers & Blazers. Not necessarily all three together (although.... it definitely could work). These three things have been staples in my closet! My favorite pair of red jeans, loafers, and blazer. Each item is extremely versatile. Love x 3.

9. No meat! Giving up meat this year was unexpected, but it's been great. I feel much better and much healthier!

10. J. Crew. Now J. Crew totally made a comeback this year. Great for my closet, horrible for my wallet. But in all seriousness... I have a hard time not finding something new to lust over every time I enter the store. This year I've bought shorts, shirts, jeans, blazers, shoes, coats, belts, and accessories. If that doesn't describe the success of the brand this year, I don't know what does.

NYE Outfits

I know, I know... it's tomorrow night. But these outfits can (mostly) be thrown together last minute depending on your plans. Or, you know, you can always make an "emergency" trip to the mall.

Even though it's easy to imagine yourself at some glamourous party, there are so many different ways to ring in the new year. I put together outfits for five different types of nights. Whatever floats your boat!!!

Who needs a guy to kiss at the stroke of midnight anyway??? (Well, it'd be nice... but not necessary!) Grab your close girlfriends and get all dolled up. Set up a fun little photoshoot... or just open your PhotoBooth on your map and take thousands of pictures in your cute outfits. The best part? You can kick off your shoes at the first hint of pain.

You can have fun with your outfit even if your night is just a casual dinner and movie date. Although you may go for flats on a regular night, opt for a little height. Glam up a comfortable shirt with a statement necklace and cinch your waist with a glittery belt.

No plans? This is my kind of New Year's outfit right here. Cozy up on the couch with the remote control, a bowl of popcorn, and a cup of tea. Flip between the numerous NYE specials on TV (even Disney.........). Be sure to set your cell phone alarm for 11:58, just in case you fall asleep!

Are you a lucky girl with some super fun date night lined up? A fancy schmancy party? Go all out... but keep it classy. No need for some skimpy dress that leaves nothing to the imagination. (I mean, honestly... how to girls sit in those dresses anyway!!!) Turn heads with a classic ensemble.

This may be the highest grossing night for babysitters around the country. Volunteer to sit for all the neighborhood kids. Gather everyone up and have a fun night making party poppers and practicing the countdown with everyone under 11 years old. Go for comfort... it's going to be a long night.

Have you sent out your Thank You notes after Christmas (or Hanukkah)? It's okay, I won't tell on you if you haven't yet!!!

But now is most definitely the time!!! I always go to a local stationery store to pick up a pack or two. This year I went with grey + yellow chevron. Kind of obsessed.

Obviously, Kate Spade. Say "Thank You" in a super festive manner!

I am in love with this font and the simple, yet somehow simultaneously intricate, design. Paper Source is a great source for, well, paper. We have a store right on M St. in DC and I spend way too much time poring over the various odds and ends on the tables.

This is also from the Paper Source, but I think this could easily be a hand-made DIY project. Instead of using an ink pad for stamps, opt for paint!

Three!

College Prep turned three earlier this week! I have no idea how I missed this big milestone... I couldn't fall asleep the other night and I was trying to make a list of posts. And somewhere along the train of my thought, I remembered! I posted my first College Prep post just after Christmas. (I wasn't sure of the exact date, and sure enough my trusty little iPhone confirmed my suspicions: College Prep officially turned another year older.)

I love that I started blogging right before the new year. There's something super clean-feeling about getting ready for the new year and reaching a year milestone.

(The only "birthday" picture I could find where I was blowing out a candle! haha)

Three is also such a weird number. I've written no fewer than four essays/papers (not an exaggeration) on the number three. So, I'm especially looking forward to what this year will hold!

Over the years, College Prep has certainly evolved... and the evolution is far from over. I will be graduating in May and I will have to figure out what to do with the name "College Prepster" and/or if I want to change it at all. I will be going through tons of personal changes (and, surely, challenges) as I transition from College Life to Real Life. Certainly, College Prep will have to keep up!!!

Thanks to everyone who reads this silly little blog. I would probably still write it even if no one read it, but having readers does make it a lot more fun!!! I love reading your comments. I love interacting on Twitter. I love answering your emails.

Skin Care Routine

I have had various skin care routines over the years, but I finally have a good system in place that seems to be working. It's really only based on trial & error plus a little luck.

I definitely don't have perfect skin, but if I do this routine, well, routinely it seems to curb all the gross skin blemishes that creep up. (Unless I am super stressed, in which case my skin fights back with a vengeance.) My skin, for the most part, has definitely "calmed down" a lot now that I'm not a teenager. I like to say that my skin had major teenage angst ;-)

So what's the routine?

I alternate every other night.

Night A: I use the Clarisonic Mia with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. I have used the other Cetaphil cleansers, but my skin is super sensitive and the gentle is the only one that doesn't dry my skin out. (And, bonus, it doesn't have a weird smell like the others!)

Night B: I only use the Clarisonic every other night so I don't irritate my skin. But I do like to use a scrub instead. The St. Ives Apricot is hand's down the best. I don't know what the secret is in this thing, but I swear it's magic! It's the perfect consistency and the perfect amount (read: just barely) of smell. Don't use the Clarisonic with a scrub!!! Just a warning!

After I cleanse my face, I always follow up with this MAGICAL stuff.

I need a lifetime supply of Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10. It's literally better than anything you could get from the dermatologist. It's potent (sorry I'm not sorry) and gets the job done in a big way. I only use a tiny bit, because it really dries out the skin, but on problem areas this is a NECESSITY. Even though it's tempting to buy the generic, it really doesn't work as well as the real deal.

cake pop overload

Soccer Mom has been baking up a storm. Cake Pops for everyone... quite literally. Cake Pops for the neighbors, Cake Pops for parties, Cake Pops for family.

Soccer Mom is quite the baker in general, but the cake pops have taken it to a new level. I've personally made quite a few trips to Michael's with her to pick up more sprinkles, more sticks, more ribbon, and more chocolate. It's gotten to the point where she may or may not be ordering in bulk ;-)

I mean, they are pretty cute :-)

She made some for a party a few weeks ago... and received more orders. How funny is her car loaded with cake pops "out for delivery"? Just like Santa's Sleigh!

I love to paint. There's something super relaxing about sitting down and zoning out and just painting. Unfortunately, I don't have much time at school to paint. (And frankly, I don't bring paints to school so I don't get distracted and paint instead of study!)

Happy Hanukkah!

This year is a true true true Chrismukkah, which makes for very happy Heitlingers. We celebrate both holidays and it's always fun when there is an overlap.

We're having a Chrismukkah dinner on Christmas night with the extended family, so we are testing some recipes for the big night. First up, sufganiyots. (Also known as Jelly Doughnuts.) When Sporty Sister and I were little, we used to watch Shalom Sesame... which was basically the Isreali version of Sesame Street and they had this whole thing about sufganiyots!!!

They were super delicious. (Anyone with an iPhone use the 8mm app???)

I also did some digging around and found this video about Shalom Sesame with clips from the Chanukah show... I literally remember every single line???

Maybe it's just me, but I think Christmas morning requires cute pajamas. It's probably just because when we were younger my sister and I always wore matching pajamas on Christmas Eve so we could look cute in the morning. (I have extremely vivid memories of super tight elastic around the wrists of the nightgown that drove me crazy... but I would never think to take them off!)

Oxfords 3 Ways

Button downs, button ups, or oxfords. No matter which way you say it, the oxford shirt is a staple in the closet. I typically wear one at least once a week. I even have one that's my go-to for rainy days!

I love how the shirts can be worn in completely different ways. Last night, I was babysitting for four extremely fun (read: crazy) little kids. I'm talking about wrestling on the floor, wii video games, lifting them up, pulling them apart, and dodging Nerf guns. I wore a loose oxford with jeans and ballet flats and couldn't believe how resilient the shirt is. Seriously, when (if?) I have kids (...many years from now) I will definitely wear one, basically, every single day.

The New Headband

Oh boy. I really do love headbands. But I have a slight problem with collecting them. (And J. Crew is the worst worst worst for putting them right by the cash registers! They're my version of buying chewing gum while in line at the grocery store.)

Now, the real problem occurs when I wear headbands. To start, I get a horrible headache every time I wear them, no matter what style.

And now that I have new glasses that I actually wear the majority of the time:

I can't even really wear headbands at all, headaches or not.

I think my new headband is going to be little hair clips. I mean, there are just days when my hair is not cooperating and needs something to tame it!!! (Anyone else here have bad hair days??? I can't be the only one!)

I saw this on Pinterest (it didn't have a source, so if you know where it comes from let me know and I'll link it up!), and I think it's brilliant. I have way too many nail polishes and I could paint bobby pins for every single different type of outfit!

LAST MINUTE, but PERFECT Gifts

So you totally dropped the ball and have put of Christmas shopping until the last minute.

(Don't feel bad, it happens to the best of us!)

The best news is that shopping in 2011 has never been easier or quicker... and the options are totally fun. And I can honestly say that if anyone got me any of these things, I would be one happy camper. And the best part? The giving doesn't end after just one short present-filled day... it goes on and on!

California Funk and I gave each other Pandora One music subscriptions for a whole year. I use Pandora all the time. It's constantly on when I'm in my room, whether I'm studying, straightening my hair, or folding laundry. Constant! Pandora One has better quality music than regular pandora and no commercials!!! This is the perfect gift for a student or really any music guru.

Netflix! I do not watch a lot of television because I don't have time, but whenever I get terrible bouts of insomnia (it comes and goes) I watch the strangest documentaries on here. (Oh, and every episode of Mad Men slash Friday Night Lights.....) You can choose different number of months to give, but this is basically an amazing present for, well, anyone.

I don't use Birchbox... it's not something that I would necessarily buy for myself. However, I'd totally love to receive it as a gift! Maybe one of your friends hasn't quite been able to "pull the trigger" on purchasing the beauty boxes and you can do it for her!

Magazine subscriptions can be bought online, too. The best part about going this route is that it's pretty customizable. Your friend is getting married in a year? Bridal magazine! Your sister is in high school? Teen Vogue! Your cousins are eight years old? Highlights! Your boyfriend's mother loves to scrapbook? Martha Stewart Living! (Really, you could check everyone off on your list!)

Perfect Layers

I am loving the plaid shirt + sweater + pearls look right now. It's so easy and simple. Basically, take a plaid shirt. (I prefer a shirt shirt and not a flannel when layering with sweaters.) Add a sweater on top. Roll the cuffs of the shirt over the sweater. Throw on varying lengths of pearls.

I have to put aside my OCD differences when I put together these outfits. I really can't stand when clothes feel "bunched" up at all... and I may or may not spend about ten minutes just tugging and adjusting the shirt so I can feel 10% more comfortable.

J. Crew is crushing it with their plaids this season. It's actually quite an issue for me because I can't not pop into the store if I just so happen to be going down M St. Right? I mean, hello, super tempting!!! I could never win ;-)

I just got this one last week. It's a little big, so if you order one you may have to go down a size, or bring to a tailor.

I loved the plaid, but it's "suckered" so it kinda looks wrinkled. If you can get passed the wrinkled look, I say to go with this one!!!

Oh... this one looks too fabulous with tons of pearls. Everyone in J. Crew had it on, but they didn't have my size and I was more than a little disappointed!

I love the v-neck of this cable knit. It will be perfect to show the collar and some pop of plaid with the pearls.

This sweater is most definitely a splurge, but it's gorgeous.

And you just can't go wrong with the trusty Jackie Cardigan. For this one, instead of rolling the cuff of the sleeve once, you may have to roll it a few times until it's situated well on the shorter sweater sleeve length!

College Prepster Book Club + New Selection

What did you think of The Mill River Recluse?

I just finished up the LAST Harry Potter book. Ugh. I can't thank you guys enough for encouraging me to give the series another shot. Of course, the last book was definitely my favorite... but I really loved them all.

I grew incredibly close to each character. Don't you feel like you can find something relatable from every single one of them?

So December's book club book is going to be Harry Potter themed. If you haven't read the series at all, I totally recommend that you do. (The first book is kind of childish, but it's an easy read to get through and then they get SO SO SO good.) If you haven't read the series in a while, pick up your favorite installment and read it over break!

I already plan on watching the movies over break... I haven't seen the last four! Ahhhhhh!

You know, the whole psychology behind birth order and personality totally fits the two of us. I'm super uptight and she's totally go with the flow. I'd rather spend 23 hours by myself and 1 with other people, and she'd... well... love to spend 24 hours surrounded by friends!

We're so different... both our personalities and our looks. (I'm still bitter that she got the olive skin gene....) But we get along really well.

If there was to be one picture I wanted to remember my childhood, this would definitely be it. It's so perfect and so "us."

But this one is pretty great too! Pocahontas birthday party in Boston... love it.

After some unusually warm weeks in DC, it's actually getting cold. (Good thing I'm heading home to Tampa tomorrow!!!)

But all this cold weather and paper writing is making me miss warmth and all fun things that summer has to offer.

A little walk down memory lane is most definitely necessary to remind myself that there is a such thing as sunlight.

This has been a crazy semester, but definitely one of the best. I feel a mix of emotions now that it's winding down. (I still have a few papers to finalize and submit... and, of course, getting grades back.) I can't believe that after this, I only have a semester left of college. I'm sorry, what??? It feels like I was just failing out of Accounting 101. (Oh goodness, still wondering how I survived that!) And now here I am making plans for the future. My "Real World Future."

Let's see.

I took five classes! Four of which were amazing, and one which was worse than pulling teeth. I loved my professors this semester.

This was the first semester of college without coxing for the rowing team. To be honest, I loved the sport and had many good times. I met my closest Georgetown friends on the team. I had amazing opportunities, like racing at Henley with four amazing guys. Without crew in my schedule though, I had so much more time to focus on myself, my schoolwork, and my blogging/magazine.

Speaking of that, I have had these ridiculously amazing opportunities this semester with regards to my blog and working on the magazine. I've met incredible people, online, on the phone, and in person. I feel like this is really really really crazy but amazing at the same time.

I also was a teaching assistant for my favorite class from last semester. Can I tell you how much fun I had??? The professor is ridiculous and over the top, but so so so good at what he does. (He's also extremely supportive... even when you have a full fledged panic attack in the middle of the class... happened.) I definitely signed up to TA only because I wanted the chance to get to take the class over again! The students in the class are so driven and motivated and I love surrounding myself with those types of people. They make me better. I can't even put into words how much this class has changed me.

One weird thing about being a senior is that most "friend groups" are established, and it can feel like you can't make any new friends. (Especially when your best friend graduates and decides to move to England.) However, I've met some pretty amazing friends through my classes. I'm so happy about that.

I am excited for Christmas break, but I'm also looking forward to beginning my last semester as a college student!

Vegetarian Update

Remember how I became a vegetarian back in May? I'm still going with it. I'm not super strict about "animal products," but I don't eat any kind of meat meat. I even survived Thanksgiving without eating turkey or anything! I think I was psyching myself out thinking Thanksgiving was going to be horrible without being able to eat turkey, but it was literally a non-issue.

I do eat fish and eggs still. I love egg white omeletes on stressful mornings and I can't turn down Bang Bang Shrimp from Bonefish.

Since cutting meat out entirely, I seriously feel so much better. I don't think this is necessarily because I don't have meat in my body, but more so because I have to find "healthier" alternatives for meals that don't contain meat. This means that 90% of the time when I eat out, I'm eating dark green salads with tons of vegetables.

At the beginning, the only thing I really "missed" was Chick-fil-a, but then I found out I was lactose intolerant after drinking half a milkshake from there... and I do NOT miss it anymore. (If you ever have the chance to throw up for 45 minutes while passed out the floor of a super disgusting gas station, I promise you won't have much of an appetite for whatever you ate again. This gets good at 4:42)

The hardest part is having to do a little planning and research. Like googling the menus of restaurants and asking for changes in the food. It's also really easy to feel like you can just eat tons of carbs instead of meat. Like breads and cakes and cookies and, basically, junk. Yea, technically there's no meat, but it is not good for you!!!

At the end of the day, you really have to listen to your body. Typically, I start to "crash" by 4pm if I didn't fuel my body properly throughout the day. My go-to emergency body recuperator? Almonds (or any type of nut).

Are you considering not eating meat? I decided to give up meat cold turkey (haha), but I recommend if you're not willing to make the plunge completely to choose non-meat options whenever possible and slowly eliminating it from your diet. It takes time to build up "menus" of what you like to eat and what works for your body/schedule.

While I may not be that into Christmas decorations (especially in a house), I am quite fond of incorporating as much red as possible into the month of December. Lots of fun Christmas-y things are red, and I'm pulling my current favorite RED thing!

These are incredibly comfortable and can be worn so many different ways. I've been lusting after red jeans since the summer and I finally found a pair I loved!

Kate Spade bangles are my favorite. I like that they're fun and be worn with anything (even a t-shirt and jeans on the weekend!). I typically layer them with a few other bracelets, but they definitely are cute enough to stand on their own. Wearing a little black dress for a holiday party? Add a teeny pop of unexpected color on your wrist.

Speaking of Kate Spade, if there was any excuse to whip out the red lipstick.... this is it!!! Gosh, how fancy would you feel pulling this cute lipstick out of a clutch before leaving your car at a party? I say, find some mistletoe STAT.

For low-key holiday events (hmm... like cuddling up and reading a book, shopping in the grocery store, watching re-runs of Gossip Girl, or just wrapping presents) this red honeycomb cable sweater says, "Happy Holidays!!!!" with four exclamation points.

Waking up on Christmas morning (and going to bed on Christmas eve for that matter) in red pajamas is a must.

Don't forget to get your cell phone in the holiday spirit as well! I found this one on Etsy and think they're pretty darn cute!

Gift Guide :: Handmade

On a budget? No problem. Handmade gifts are super inexpensive but super personal! It also take some effort (definitely more than clicking "Add to cart") so the recipient knows you worked hard to bring some holiday love to them!

I made these shirts for my friends a couple of Christmas' ago. They're really fun, and can be personalized in so many ways!

These aren't entirely handmade, but the painted monograms add a special something to a plain pair of moccasins. Here's the post on how I made mine. The Minnetonka moccasins aren't too expensive either.

These subway art signs are amazing... but take forever. Scale down and make mini-ones for friends and family!

Cross stitch your family (or group of friends). Perfect excuse to catch up on a television series while you whip these up!

Organize, Please... Finals Week!

Are you as stressed out as I am??? I don't think I've been this stressed since freshman year (and we all know how that turned out....). I would be lying if I said that I haven't cried, um, every night for the past week. Between managing emails, blogging every day, having a major Sweet Lemon Magazine deadline, and this little thing called finals... I'm overworked.

I read about this system in some book (but can't for the life of me remember which one) and I decided to give it a try this year.

Index Cards.

In addition to a wall of calendars and my agenda and Google calendar, I needed something that I could touch and feel and flip around and lay out in different formations on a desk.

I made each index card into one day. I'm using them to keep track of meetings, class times, phone conferences, due dates, and daily to-dos. It's easy to pull out the stack of cards and see if I have time to schedule a group meeting or not.

And for some reason, having separate cards (as opposed to one spread per week in an agenda) makes me realize how much time I actually have to work on things. Basically, it keeps things in perspective.

A little more close up. You can see that everything highlighted has been done. Super simple!

(Side note: why did I schedule a trip to NYC during finals??? But, I will admit, I have some pretty awesome things going on then!)

I can take the cards and put it in my agenda day by day...

(Like that green blotch??? I had two pens EXPLODE. Green & Purple hands for two days, ladies and gentlemen. Ugh)

Thanksgiving: Instagram Edition

I accumulated all these cute Instagram pictures! I had an absolutely fantastic break and the pictures, I think, show just how much fun I had!

They're kinda out of order, but I think that just adds to the spontaneity of the post ;-)

Packing. I really tried not to overpack. Of course, I overpacked. (Sweaters? Really, what was I thinking??? It was 80 degrees the whole time)

It's a mom + sisters tradition to go to a tea room the day before Thanksgiving. Sugar coma before the Turkey coma!

Obviously, I did not turn down a manicure with my mom. Even if it meant waking up early on the first day home.

So much Bang Bang. We're kind of obsessed. And $5 on Wednesdays!!!

Carrot Cake pops. (Would you say Carrot Cake Cake Pops???) So delicious, and the perfect little take-home for guests.

Eating outside by candles and strings of light is kind of the most perfect setting.

My high school rowing coach's wife had a baby! A beautiful baby boy.

Soccer Mom and I took advantage of "Small Business Saturday" to pop into every boutique in South Tampa.

Cut out cookies are a necessity.

Sporty Sister went to a deb ball... how gorgeous is she???

Friday afternoon lunch at J. Alexanders... Chips & Salsa all day, every day.
